I've Got Color! Contest: Eric's subdued Retreat

Bedroom 1.jpg

Name: Eric
Location: San Francisco

Why I use color:

"Color can be vibrant or more subdued. By using a neutral back drop of color - it allows me to change the feel of the entire room with each of the seasons. Duvet's, pillows, artwork can be changed and then become the focal point. I like to match colors with each season. It is like having a whole new space without needing to redo the entire room. The eye is naturally drawn to these punches of color."

Bedroom 2.jpg

Color Tips:

"1. Paint a test area on the wall for your color and live with it a couple of days - to see how it changes with different lighting. That vivid paint sample may not look as good when it is on an entire wall.
2. Generally use 1 - 2 primary colors within a room
3. One red (or other color) accent wall can make an entire room."

Color Resources:
1. Benjamin Moore
2. Color wheel - to see which colors work well off each other.

I love the chair upholstery, mix of white curtains with bamboo shades, and the way the curtains are hung dramatically high. This creates such a nice focal pont on that side of the room. Also, very nice placement of accessories and art. I have a feeling this room is much lovlier in person.

The first photo makes me want to go on a vacation somewhere sunny and warm, somewhere on the other hemisphere. Has a travel magazine feel. Very much like the way the whole room feels. Has a nice comforting feeling.

I like this room very, very much. The way the blinds and curtains are at ceiling height is very well done. I also like the neatness and symetry. Most impressive, though, is the wall color. It's so difficult to use that beigy-yellow and these entrants have done a superb job.

i think this is a lovely bedroom, but not enough color, as i have interpreted the contest.

It's a lovely room, but you got neutrals!
Don't be disappointed by the 'yellow ribbons' - I think that will be all about the non-neutral color choices sought after in this month's contest.

I love the room -- beautiful shade of beige, soothing yet eye-catching touches of color, simple lines, interesting mix of woods, non-fussy window treatment (does it screen an iffy view?). It's soothing without being dull, classy without being inaccessible. I agree with Guido in interpreting this as a room defined by neutrals, though. I'd vote it higher in a Beige Doesn't Have to Be Boring competition.

I think a really narrow definition of "color" is being applied by the voters and commenters here.

Um, tan is a color! That chair is a color! The art is color! NEUTRALS ARE COLOR. oy.

And anybody calling this "beige" needs to get thee to a colorwheel.

Eric--
Don't be discouraged. This room is GORGEOUS and has every right to be here, Plus, NEXT year, when people are sitting around in terribly dated orange rooms, your bedroom will STILL be gorgeous.

I appreciate Eric's pairing of the bamboo blinds with white floor length curtains. I'd love to see how this warm and inviting room fits with the rest of the house. Bravo to Eric for looking seeing beyond the brash color choices that most of the entrants have made.

Patrick,

I couldn't agree more. It is like when my wife tries to tell me Vanilla isn't a flavor!

Eric,I like the color very much, but the question of the day is- What color is it? I know it is Benjamin Moore, but what shade? I've been looking for the right beige for too long and creamy white as well (thank you for the warm white paint story!) I agree with the other Patrick, bright colors get old fast, neutrals soothe and live on. Change the accessories for more color without having to repaint every year to regain sanity. I just moved out of an apt. with a Ralph Lauren Dressage Red Living room. Yes, beautiful and exciting...the first few months. Then after about 8 months, I practically wanted to claw it off the wall. All accesories have to work with the color and I began to feel very limited. Color is great, don't get me wrong, but choose carefully.

I was going to enter this contest but thought that the fact that it was a COLOR contest ruled me out since my place is pretty neutral - soft sea green and pale gold. But I agree with P2 - color is color. It doesn't have to be chartruese and magenta to qualify. Oh well, next contest.

My bedroom is painted what looks like this exact color! Is yours Benjamin Moore's Yosemite Sand???

I agree with P2 as well. I'm surprised by all the yellow ribbons. This room is lovely. Just because it doesn't have a big Green or orange wall (or is it ornage?) doesn't mean it isn't a breat use of color. I love it.

Your room is the best one i've seen so far. It looks very classy and has a timeless appeal. I totally disagree with the comments about the lack of color. You have it and it is not loud and screaming like the other entries.

I couldn't agree more with Patrick(the other one). The relaxing shades of color, the style of furniture, the lines, the placement of art and the accents are all pulled together in a deliberate scheme. Its lovely and I could blissfully go to sleep on that bed in a second.

Thanks for sharing,

This color is a light brown to me. I definitely consider it a color, and I love this room. Bright and dark colors are great, but I love mid-tone earth colors like this, especially with the furniture.

This is a truly beautiful room.

I like this room more and more each time I look at it. I'm a big fan of the blue/green palette, and the creamy walls are a perfect backdrop. I'm also quite impressed by the mixture of very dark and very light wood tones. I also love how you used the small dressers (?) as nightstands. It looks like there's lots of storage in this room, without any of it being looming armoires or too crowded.

You have a lot of art in here, but nothing on the long wall above the bed. My instinct would be to put something there, but I'd have to be in the room to see if that would make it too crowded. Maybe something sculptural? Large-scale candle sconces, or a wooden frieze, or alabaster vases on a shelf?

Eric--
Congrats on the room and thanks for sharing it with us.
