Good Upholsterers in LA

Need to Recover? One of the questions we get asked most is where to go for recovering furniture. Since we're in the market to get new cushions made for our Danish Modern sofa in time for the holidays we thought we'd put together a roundup of our favorites and hopefully we'll add some more to the list:

Chalios 213-250-5344
• Mundo's Upholstery Shop 323-222-5872.
• Sofas & More (in Eagle Rock) 323-550-8782

Some Furniture stores will recover your furniture too. These will be pricier but they specialize in modern furniture:

Denmark 50 on Melrose can do this, and they're absolute experts with Danish Modern. Wayne runs the place, but can be, well, aloof, to put it nicely.

Still, they do fabulous work and have surprisingly reasonable rates for reupholstering...

I can vouch for Toni at Sofas and More in Eagle Rock. They carefully re-upholstered my midcentury bent plywood rolling chair with attached tufted cushion back. The guy who originally sold me the chair said it would take a good re-upholsteror to do it well. They didn't seem to have any trouble with it.

I whole-heartedly recommend Ray at United Upholstery (aka "the upholstery man") in Silverlake.

We got several things done after seeing the work he did for Sueño on Sunset. Very good and good turn-around time. Prices are reasonable as well and he'll work with any fabric you give him or you can pick from the wide array of samples he has.

    He's at 323-661-1151 (3028 W. Sunset Boulevard).

anyone on the west side? I have one of these chairs (I might call them Hans Wegner style) that came with pink velvet cushions, and I'd like to try something different without driving across town.

I just purchased two chairs similar to these, but they have no upholstery at all. Any ideas on where to get the cushions made [in LA] or how to describe the appropriate cushions they require?

Hey tony--most of the places listed will not only re-upholster but they will also make cushions to your specifications. That's what I'm needing to do for a sofa and chair set that match the picture above. I'm looking for references for the shape and style to show whoever ends up making them. Good luck!

I have had good luck (several times, over the past 20 years!) with Ye Olde Upholstery Shop in Santa Monica. It's on Lincoln Blvd - the west side of the street - just north of Pico. It is family run, and the father is a very skilled upholsterer.
