I've Got Color! Contest: Gari's Sexy, Brown Bedroom

polonius red-1 copy.jpg

Name: Gari
Location: Fremont, CA

Why I use color:

"Color signifies a milieu of moods particular to a person's senses and inhibitions. It conjures the essence of daily living. It elaborates intimacy and warmth and mimics passages of emotions."

Color Tips:

"Use color sparingly in a naturally occurring way.
Use of low-voltage (halogen) lighting can dramatically enhance the color tones of a room.
Use different hues of a particular color rather than introducing another color palate."

Nice! A little sparse, but I that dark brown is striking. I wouldn't have expected to like this at all, but the effect is very sultry.

The darkness of the brown must help you prepare for bed. I like it a lot. But that giant white hand is mega freaky.

Swank, sexy, sophisticated. Love the deep brown walls and how the chair, Ericophone and hand sculpture pop! The 3 lighting choices rock.

love the phone, hate the hand, and wish the W hotel would give me a choco room like this next time I visit...

posted by guido on 2005-10-17 13:37:18

Wait, I'm still having trouble getting past the fact there are people with this much style living in Fremont...

I love the combination of the brown and red. It does have a very "hotel" kind of feeling, which is nice in a bedroom.

Lovely!

Chocolate-covered swank. Nicely done!

I like the big hand in the bedroom. Wait... that doesn't sound right... ;)

Love that the bedside lights do not match. (overall, a nicely "collected" feel to it). And again, color is handled so even the whites look intentional, not an afterthought.

Is the wall-mounted light brass or silver?

is something stripey going on with the door? i hope so, it looks really cool!

posted by lilywould on 2005-10-17 14:09:20

I love it, it's beautiful. Where did you get the green pillow with the circles on it? I love the way it ties everything together.

posted by Kathryn on 2005-10-17 14:32:21

Oh dear -- Bay Area housing prices have driven the cool people as far as Fremont! Having apartment-hunted in the wilds of lower East Bay, I'm VERY impressed with what has to be a major transformation of the original space. But I'm a sucker for brown.

posted by wende on 2005-10-17 14:42:32

Thanks god brown has come a long way since the 60's and 70's. I'm finally feeling like it's grown up and become an elegant colour now. Well done.

Yet another home where I completely offer my house sitting services.

posted by Dee on 2005-10-17 15:47:40

i love that brown! We did brown in the bedroom and I think it says more "eggplant" than "chocolate." Can you remeber the brown you used?

posted by Simone on 2005-10-17 17:40:47

Very nice...imagine everything in this room with white walls and you can really see the impact of the color.

Now I want a brown bedroom!

...but the implication that cool people only live in certain zip codes is extremely annoying.

How did you hide the wires on that lcd screen?

A funny line from the movie Boogie Nights: "Chocolate love"!

A nice, soothing room. Love the bed and lighting.

Rachael--
I, too, thought "Boogie Nights" when I saw this, even though Dirk Diggler should have had this much style!

Very very Very nice. I tried the chocolate in my apartment once when i lived in Boston and it didn't work well. But man this looks good. Very Very W Hotel and that's a good thing. As cool as it is, its not New york. I knew the apartment wasn't in new york without knowing where it was located. Too perfect, but that's not an insult. Your place is fab. no complaints here. And, the hand is little Adam's family, but that's OK.

The lighting is perfect! ... and every element in the room is a perfect fusion that gives one a feel of home away from home. I should know... i was a guest in that room sometime last year. Thanks Gari for the hospitality.

I like it.

You make me want to unpack my Genie phone and put it out.

And even be OK with a dark, dark room. Some might feel a little oppressive - this and Turquoise's dark-walled room both feel like little tunnels of luxury.

posted by miranda on 2005-10-17 20:50:05

I'm getting chocolate endorphins just looking at it. You only need a pummelo to place in that hand sculpture.

Wonderful work. Good luck in the contest.

I love it, although I'm not sure I could live in a bedroom this dark--but I do think it's great. Love the brown/red combo and the hand, which is not freaky at all.

posted by Fiona on 2005-10-18 07:51:01

Ericophone???

I want one! Where did you get it?

Gorgeous room, by the way : )

fantastic!

posted by Adriel on 2005-10-18 09:10:07

I love it. It kinda reminds me of Chad's bedroom (remember that one?) but with a more personal and inviting style.

I disagree with the too perfect for NY statement. Look at ptoo's place for just one example to refute that.

posted by jamie pup on 2005-10-18 09:55:00

Oops, I forgot to ask - where did you get that light on your nighstand from? We're trying to find the right lamps for our Wenge nighstands and that would fit perfectly!

posted by jamie pup on 2005-10-18 09:56:31

thanks so much for all your comments guys! to those who have asked, here are the infos:

- the swing-arm wall lamp is by Nessen in a polished chrome finish.

- the pillow cover is from a vintage curtain panel which i had purchased off at Ebay.

- the paint used for the walls is by Behr, color is called Stone Hearth.

- the LCD wires are concealed behind the neck of the base. the unit provides a notched space for the wire/s.

- the Ericophone is a gift from a friend. You might be able to find one on Ebay.

posted by gari on 2005-10-18 10:02:03

jamie pup, the lamp on the night stand is a Ralph Lauren lamp wrapped in black leather with polished chrome accents at the base and top. it's a TJMAXX find that had been marked-down for 59 bucks :)

posted by gari on 2005-10-18 10:09:36

love the chocolate color and the simplicity of the room itself. hate the hand. and i'm yet another person whose mind is boggled by the fact that this is in fremont. who knew?

Tashsa--
"I knew the apartment wasn't in new york without knowing where it was located. Too perfect..."

Girl, 'splain yourself! Them thar's fightin' words! ;)

gari--
All that style AND you score a RL lamp at TJMAxx?! You are a catch!

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2005-10-18 14:27:01

ps: Thanks for identifying that the swing arm lamp is chrome (and Nessen always a good choice). It's refecting the warm colors in the room so I couldn't tell. I asked because I have been (nervously) noticing brass and gold-tone metals sneaking back in...

posted by patrick (the other one) on 2005-10-18 14:29:54

refecting = reflecting

So cool! Perfect bedroom.

You won't belive this but I have a dark brown bedroom too. and laying across the dresser -- I have a big white hand.

I pulled my hand out of a garbage can in front of the Hell's Angels office in the East Village. The hand originally belonged to a mannequin and is now peeling, showing layers and layers of white.

posted by Chris on 2005-10-19 06:40:44

I probably should know the answer to this, but sadly I don't:

What is that beatiful (bent ply?) red chair?

posted by Diego on 2005-10-19 09:58:18

Almost laughed out loud at "I pulled my hand out of a garbage can in front of the Hell's Angels office in the East Village." What a great sentence.

posted by me (the first one) on 2005-10-19 18:31:47

And it is vastly better than some alternative variations of that sentence.

diego, its called the oto lounge chair by Voxia.

I have always enjoyed the rich browns with sensual red accents. The room flows and is excited by the fact that everything doesn't match. This space proves there is still balance in difference. It works... and works well.

Kudos Gari.

I truly love the feel and texture of the space created.

Patrick, I live in new york city and love it. New yorkers have a wonderful way of making things look lived in rather than hotelish!

Gari, I'm surprised no one asked, but maybe everyone else knows, I was taken by the beautiful wood dresser, it has a 30's elegence to it, and I would kill for one...you happen to remember where you got it? (I'd also love to hear about the night stands)

i love the color of your room. any chance you have photos posted of the rest of your apartment? i'm trying to get a cohesive theme going for mine...

That's not an Ericofon...but you can find an Ericofon at Ericofon.com. I think Mr. Rose also sells that "donut phone" also.
