I'll be in San Diego over Memorial Day weekend. Are there any design-related stores that I need to check out? I'm more interested in accessories than major furniture purchases.

Thanks!

Hi Kathryn,

Well, San Diego is my hometown, even though I moved to NYC at 17 to go to college and have been here ever since. I'll actually be there the week of 4/24 for my Mother's b-day, so if that coincides, let me know and I'll send you my email address.

Design in San Diego.....there's Cedros Street in Solana Beach (North County) that's actually a design district unto itself. The Hillcrest area towards downtown and the Pacific Beach area both offer some cool stuff in the way of funky West Coast style. Also, definitely go to Mexico if you can and check out the local craftsmanship -- there are things made there that are really unique and unlike anything you could find here.

Hope this helps!! Enjoy!!

:)

Hi Scanlynn,

Thanks so much for the tips - I'm looking forward to checking that out while the BF goes to the baseball game :)

Has anyone heard anything about the SF site launch date? Not that I don't love LA, but I need SF craigslist listings!

posted by Heather C on 2006-04-11 14:12:37

Heather, just go to Craigslist SF. http://www.craigslist.org/
That should keep you busy until the SF AT site starts up.

I do that every day, but I know I'm missing hidden treasure and its driving me crazy! Plus, I'm finding great stuff that I don't need/can't use.

Sadly though, the best stuff I've ever found was in LA. *sigh*

Hey Wende, have you seen this "green dollhouse" exhibit? It looks like it is traveling around, but coming back to Coyote Point in September. Nifty!

Oh how fun! I missed it when it was initially in San Mateo but will have to hit it on the return leg (or make another trip to Sacramento).

Ah! I want to visit the greendollhouse exhibit! Darn.. too bad I no longer live in Sac!

Any West Coasters who entered (& others) planning on going to the DWR smallest contest party in Manhattan Beach? It's a bit of a hike, but I'm considering it.

I missed the Weho kick off shindig. Is it worth it it?

I'm thinking about it, but it depends on husband's schedule with his client, as I really can't run off to Los Angeles on one of the rare days that he's in San Francisco. Bleh.

I saw this on HGTV last night and thought it was an amazing table:

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hiwt/resource/0,2496,HGTV_21356_52780,00.html

It's sold at a store on Hayes St. in SF called Propeller.

The show airs again today and on the 16th. Almost everything else they featured was really stupid/lame but this table was great.

HOT TUB
About ten years ago, in another life, and a much bigger house, I had an indoor hot tub room (whirlpool spa - to be precise). I would like to do it again in smaller more compact digs. I'm looking for something small (two person), comfy, sexy, and moveable - since I may be moving to another condo (ground floors only!) in the not too distant future. Most everything I see seats a cast of thousands and costs a firstborn. Any advise? Comments?

Hello Kathryn,

I was just in San Diego last summer and had a wonderful time. I didn't see your name linking to an email addy, so I'll just answer your questions here on the board. I hope you come back and see this!

For San Diego design stores, try:

*DNA Gallery at 1990 Columbia Street, San Diego
http://www.shopdnagallery.net/

*Boomerang at 2040 India Street, San Diego (Nice store, I love the area it's in called Little Italy, lots of great places to dine there.)
http://www.boomerangformodern.com

*Zazou at 2136 Kettner Blvd (Little Italy). http://www.zazouhome.com/

*Adorn at 2400 Kettner Blvd (Little Italy)
http://www.adornsd.com

*Mixture at 2210 Kettner Blvd (Little Italy) http://www.mixturedesigns.com

*Antiques on Kettner at 2400 Kettner Blvd (Little Italy) http://www.antiquesonkettner.com/

*Masquerade at 1608 India Street (Little Italy) great art and near yummy places to eat. http://www.masqueradeartofliving.com

*Bella Stanza at 1501 India Street (Little Italy) the best in Italian ceramics and glass. I loved it here: http://www.bellastanzagifts.com/

*5 and Dime at 828 G Street. Fun quirky place.
http://www.5andadime.com/

*Grounded at 25 East E St just outside of San Diego in Encinitas. I have a tour of their store on my site:
http://decor8.blogspot.com/2006/03/san-diego-get-grounded.html

*Solo at 309 South Cedros Avenue in the Cedros Design District just outside of San Diego in Solana Beach. http://www.solocedros.com

There's also a GREAT architectural salvage store at the corner of India and Grape - I frequently popped in there to pick up goodies to squeeze into my luggage. They had killer wrought iron gates and
salvaged doors. Here's the website: http://arc-salvage.com

As you can see, I spent a lot of my time in Little Italy!

By the way, make sure you have cocktails at the "W" hotel on 421 West B Street, a few blocks north of Little Italy. The second-floor rooftop beach bar is swanky and the lounge on the first floor is beautiful, too - it turns into a dance club on Friday and Saturday nights with a DJ. You'll love it if you're into design because the place is tricked out. The huge pink orb in the entryway is to die for. I want it for my apartment, but I think it would fill my entire living room space. It's like a giant pink snowball. Talk about pimp my pad. :) Lush.

Have a wonderful vacation! Don't forget to eat plenty of fish tacos with Corona down by the water!

Best,
Holly

PDX folks - I've been on a furniture prowl through CL and learning about using delicious.

http://del.icio.us/pdx_cl

some stuff that i've found. that looks cool, could be a great project, and is cheap...

decor8 holly - THANKS for all those links! they're not for me, but I've only lived in SD for a little over a year, and haven't gotten to visit too much of the great design stores. Thanks again :)

jon, i feel like i haven't left the house in a million years! Soon, I promise, I will give myself a *tiny* break and see what life is like outside in the "world." I will try so hard to remember the green dollhouse show when it comes back. Wende, I hope you will remind me! :)

Holly,

I found your blog through design*sponge, and I've bookmarked it. I check it daily. What a trove of great information. Thank you for all your hard work on it. And you're one of the few design bloggers who posts eBay finds, as I do. I say kudos.

This was an ultimately cool contest with some fascinating results. I do not envy the judges in having to select the finalists, each entry had its own assets and strong creative input that is great to see! Thanks to DWR!

WIEDER is a surprise - in spite of its minimalist looks it offers excellent comfort, thanks to high quality filling and wooden slats in the seat. Roomy and comfortable while not taking up too much space. Even more surprising is the ease with which the sofa converts into a double bed. www.wiederusa.com

hey, pdx_cl, you picked some of the same things that have caught my eye recently! I've thought about using del.icio.us but I'm worried about privacy issues...any thoughts?

trillium -

i actually have another delicious account for my personal links - for that very reason

mostly this was an exercise in using delicious - i was trying to figure out if you could create a set of links rather anonymously. couldn't figure out how, tho.

posted by PDX_CL on 2006-04-14 12:37:14

Oh, I meant, do you worry about delicious wrt your privacy, not us :)

I was wondering if they track where you click and how often and collate that info. Color me a little paranoid.

trillium
